International School Award 2021-2024 and 2024-2027 |
Hazel has again achieved full accreditation for the International School Award. Here is an excerpt from our latest accreditation report:
"I am delighted to inform you that Hazel Community Primary School has very successfully met the criteria for Reaccreditation for the Full British Council International School Award. It was a pleasure to assess your submission. It is evident that you have embedded international themes across the curriculum and throughout the year, involving all your pupils as well as the local community. Your international partnerships with schools in Chad, Senegal, and Guadeloupe, countries not commonly featured in ISA submissions, are particularly commendable. It is excellent that you have engaged schools whose pupils may have fewer opportunities to collaborate with UK students. Additionally, your partnerships with schools in Rwanda and China further enrich your international programme.
The opportunities you provide for your pupils to learn and become confident in French are impressive. It is also wonderful to see the local community involved in your Day of Languages activity, celebrating linguistic diversity.
Your close collaboration with other local schools and the impressive display of international activities on your website meet the ambassadorial requirements for reaccreditation. Many congratulations to all your staff and pupils. You have provided an example for other schools. Best of luck with all your future international endeavours."

Green Flag Eco Award 2022-23 (Green Flag Award) 2023-24 (Green Flag Award with Distinction) 2024-25 (Green Flag Award with Distinction) |
Hazel has once again achieved the Green Flag award with Distinction! Here is an excerpt from our latest accreditation report:
"We are very pleased to tell you that you and your Eco-Committee at Hazel Community Primary School have been successful in meeting the requirements for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.
We reviewed your application and noted the following:
It's wonderful that you have appointed such a representative Eco-Committee, this shows your school’s excellent commitment to both the programme and the eco-cause. It’s great to see that you had such a group of eager, enthusiastic volunteers. It was also wonderful to see that they were supported by no less than two members of staff. We love that you kept minutes from your meetings and that they helped to track, guide and prompt your activity, and thank you for including the excellent example. It was wonderful to see how completing your Environmental Review helped to raise the level of awareness in your school and helped your Eco-Committee to identify the issues and spot gaps in your school's existing environmental activity. It was also brilliant to read that the Environmental Review helped your pupils appreciate everything that your school is already doing to benefit our environment and identify areas to work on in the future. Your Action Plan shows that your Eco-Committee have carefully considered how they can involve their entire school in their planned Eco-Schools’ activities to achieve maximum impacts and raise awareness amongst their school community. We love the range of activities that you and your Eco-Committee planned for delivery. The fact that they cover both indoor (healthier meal options) and outdoor (built a bike shed and planted flower beds) activities is excellent. It was also great to see accountability and monitoring and evaluation clearly marked in your Action Plan. Great work! Your Curriculum Link examples are imaginative, practical and fun, making environmental education accessible and engaging, well done! We’re really impressed at how you’ve linked environmental issues to a variety of curriculum areas. We loved seeing the lovely photos of your pupil’s work and of them enjoying their activities. This is a great example of layering in sustainability and climate change into your studies. We loved reading about how you had incorporated learning about global issues not only into the Geography and Science Curriculum (most common ones) in your school, but also into other areas such as Art. Great work!
Congratulations to everyone for the great work you have managed to do, earning your Green Flag with Distinction in style. You should all be very proud of your work and the application you have submitted!"

Primary Science Quality Mark 2022-2025 |
We are delighted and incredibly proud to announce that Hazel has been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) for our primary science leadership and its impact across the school. The PSQM is a one-year school improvement programme for science, which provides professional development for science leaders, resulting in an improvement in the way science is planned and taught across the whole school. It is led by the University of Hertfordshire in collaboration with the Primary Science Teaching Trust.
Associate Professor Jane Turner, PSQM National Director. said: “There was never a more important time for primary children to have a high-quality science education. The coronavirus pandemic and climate change crisis have made everyone aware of the importance of science in our world. Primary schools have an important role to ensure that children understand how science works and keeps us and our planet healthy and safe. Schools that have achieved a Primary Science Quality Mark have demonstrated a significant commitment to science teaching and learning. The profile and quality of science in each awarded school is very high. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure scientific understanding and skills. Science subject leaders, their colleagues, head teachers, children, parents and governors should be very proud.”

We have been recognised in this award in particular for our focus on local place study and our clear balanced focus on disciplinary and substantive knowledge.
Our geography curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that all pupils have carefully planned opportunities to learn incrementally, whilst making connections between cause and effect, the human and physical environment and associated changes over space and time.

Linguamarque Award 2021 (Silver) |
In November 2021 Hazel was awarded the Linguamarque Bronze Award for our achievements in teaching and learning in French.
The Linguamarque Award is an accreditation given to schools who are able to demonstrate that they are teaching languages well, through well-planned sequences of lessons, and that pupils are making excellent progress. Our assessor was very pleased with the languages provision that we have at Hazel and was extremely impressed with our pupils' work.
We are very proud of our learners for all of their hard work in French and are excited to continue to develop our languages curriculum with lots of exciting events and plans coming in the future at Hazel.
